Beyond a Reasonable Doubt: Legal Language in Subtitling

November 14 / 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EST

Attend this webinar to gain insights into mastering the nuances of legal language within the art of subtitling.

One of the many challenges subtitlers have to overcome is how to convey meaning in just a few lines and in a limited time. And if we add legal language to the equation, sometimes we may feel at a loss for words.

This webinar explores the linguistic resources and techniques to translate legal terminology in subtitling projects, taking into account accuracy, register, and time and space constraints, as well as providing research tools to optimize our time and be more productive. We’ll delve into the notion of equivalence in legal translation and the abundance of false friends that may spoil the viewer’s experience. The examples provided will be taken from English into Spanish audiovisual material.

You will learn how to:

  1. Enhance accuracy in legal translations.
  2. Develop condensing and adaptation skills.
  3. Identify reliable sources for researching legal terminology.
